About Redlands and Bayside

When people think of million dollar suburbs in the greater Brisbane area, it’s the locations on the Northside and Brisbane’s Western suburbs that usually spring to mind. And the residents of Redland City, where many suburbs also boast million dollar price tags without all the fuss, are generally happy to be the quiet neighbours.

Indeed, with this access to Moreton Bay water experiences plus the abundant natural beauty on offer, we wonder sometimes whether being South East Queensland’s best kept secret is part of council strategy.

Similar to the City of the Gold Coast to the South, Redlands has no obvious urban centre and instead has larger commercial centres spread across several suburbs including Capalaba, Cleveland and Victoria Point. The various points, including Wellington Point, offer locals and tourists alike easy access to the Moreton Bay islands as well as waterfront parks, playgrounds and some excellent options for a lazy coffee or weekend fish and chips.

Residents further inland, in suburbs like Wynnum and Lytton, talk about having the best of both worlds – with easy access to Brisbane City for work, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast for beach holidays, and of course the bayside Redlands is famous for being right on their doorstep.

While Suburban Pest Management does not currently service the many islands of Moreton Bay, we do love sharing the story of North and South Stradbroke Islands. These were still connected in 1770 when Captain Cook ‘discovered’ Australia, and as a result he never sailed into Moreton Bay and in fact failed to notice the massive Brisbane River. Unlike generations of tectonic movement that create some islands, the separation of Stradbroke can be traced to two events: the shipwreck of the Cambus Wallace which was flung into the island’s narrowmost location in 1894; and a cyclone in 1896 which carved through the weakened location to create Jumpinpin Channel and therefore two separate islands.
