About Redcliffe and Moreton Bay Region

We agree with the locals – the Redcliffe peninsula and the Moreton Bay Region is clearly the best area of South East Queensland to live in – and at one point it was the only option, since Redcliffe was the first European Settlement in what is now Queensland.

A lack of reliable water supply was among the reasons the initial Redcliffe settlement was largely abandoned in favour of Brisbane City. The local Aborigines, who of course had lived in the area for tens of thousands of years, referred to the empty settlement as “humpy bongs” – translated as dead or empty houses – a name the was later anglicised and given to the whole Redcliffe peninsula.

Further inland, the 21st Century mergers of the Redcliffe, Pine Rivers, and Caboolture Shires formed the greater Moreton Bay Regional council in 2007. With a population of almost 400,000 people this is the third largest in Queensland after Brisbane City and the Gold Coast.

The region now links Moreton Bay to the mountains, combining a mix of urban and rural land and also being responsible for the stunning water vistas of Bribie Island.

The earliest inland town was Petrie, in 1868, though the expansion of the train line from Brisbane to Caboolture in 1888 created a backbone of small communities from which expansion could continue. The most recent example is the development of North Lakes in the Mango Hill area, which in a reverse of history has actually prompted the long-promised rail extension towards Redcliffe.

This population growth has tended towards Redcliffe in the east and Brisbane Northside to the south, however – the western section of the Moreton Bay Region has 76% of the land area but only 5% of the population.
