About Brisbane West

Firstly, we need to point out that the Brisbane Northside page is wrong to count two Botanical Gardens because at least one of them, at Mt Coot-tha, is definitely Brisbane West. It’s never quite clear where the separation begins, of course – suburbs like Ashgrove, Auchenflower and Enoggera are somewhere near the edge we reckon.

And from there, Brisbane’s west opens up into some of its most beautiful – and, if we can believe any Census data these days, wealthiest – suburbs. And you can see a lot of the area from Brisbane’s favourite tourist spot, the incredible look-out at Mt Coot-tha which looks out from underneath the tv towers and over the Planetarium to a breathtaking vista of Brisbane’s northside, southside and out to Moreton Bay. Of course, the best part of the view is to the West, watching the majestic Brisbane River snake through Indooroopilly, Chelmer, and out past Graceville.

This Western Corridor was opened early in Brisbane’s history – the first train line from Brisbane to Ipswich opened in 1876, and was electrified over a century later in 1979 & 1980. There are still plenty of pockets that have retained that country charm as well, from the leafy Gap to the acreage pocket of Anstead / Brookfield / Pullenvale / Bellbowrie.

It’s the community feel that binds Brisbane Western suburbs – the common ground whether you’re seated on 10 acres behind Kenmore or perched on a 405 square metre block in Paddington.
